Top 10 tips on what to pack in hospital bag for you

Based on my experience of packing my own hospital bag, I found this checklist helpful in organising myself and making sure I did not miss any important items from the list.

Tip #1 - Comfortable maternity wear

Wearing a buttoned outfit or one which is easy to take on and off is helpful. Bear in mind you may need to change into a hospital gown or breastfeed so take comfortable maternity wear. Also, an outfit you want to go home in if you are fussed about taking particular photos etc.

Tip #2 -Underwear

I took at least 2 comfortable maternity bras and a pack of 5 knickers which were loose/large so there was no pressure on my abdominal wound.

Tip #3 - Sanitary towels

I took large sanitary towels/maternity pads which I wore to manage the bleeding after childbirth one normally gets.

Tip #4 -Flips flops/comfortable slippers

Taking flip flops was a must as I needed to have a shower and needed to wear flip flops at the time. Some people may also take some fluffy/comfortable slippers to walk around on the ward.

Tip #5 -Pillow

There was a shortage of pillows on the ward I gave birth on, and I feel they are usually very soft/flimsy, so you need a few of them. In the future, I would definitely take my own pillow or breastfeeding support cushion-useful if you have had a C-section and plan to breastfeed.

Tip #6 - Nightwear

You may need to stay overnight or for a few nights if you have had any complications after giving birth so good to take some comfortable pyjamas with you if this is the case.

Tip #7 -Personal toiletries/bag

Pack a toiletry bag as you may need your toothbrush/toothpaste/face wash/face cream/deodorant/ soap/shampoo/comb.

Tip #8 -Snacks

Pack some fruit/dates/nuts/sandwiches etc. My husband was starving and only had a pear and a biscuit to eat. If he had popped out of the hospital to eat food in the evening, he would have missed our son's birth.

Tip #9 - Extras

Don't forget your mobile phone, mobile phone charger/earphones and you may even find taking a spare carrier bag with you to put your dirty clothes in for washing.

Tip #10 -Maternity notes

It is really important you remember to take your personal maternity notes with you as it will help the medical professionals looking after you in ensuring they are aware of any potential medical problems which may come up.
